Cannes, 7 June 2017Midemlab, the international pitching competition for innovative music-related startups, today announces its 2017 winners.

Presented by OVH, the major player in the European cloud market, and URights, the global music copyright management system co-developed by Sacem and IBM, Midemlab is part of the Midem music industry tradeshow, which is taking place in Cannes, France from 6-9 June 2017.

This year marking its 10th edition, Midemlab is the leading launch pad for cutting-edge startups in the entertainment industries, whose ground-breaking solutions offer fresh opportunities to the music sector. The competition provides finalists with valuable exposure to industry decision-makers and potential investors. Previous participants have raised millions of dollars in funding thanks to their Midemlab appearances, and many are now well-established in the music ecosystem. Past editions of Midemlab proved to be a valuable launchpad for many leading startups in the entertainment field such as SoundCloud, The Echo Nest, Kickstarter, BandPage, Songkick, Next Big Sound and Stagelink – to name a few.

This year’s 20 finalists were chosen from 136 submissions representing 32 countries worldwide by Midemlab’s selecting partners: music business information and strategy company Music Ally; consulting company specialising in open innovation bluenove; and Northzone, the leading investment firm and an early investor in Spotify.

Finalists pitched their business in front of the Midem audience and to a jury of potential partners and investors. As well as getting feednback from powerful decision-makers, they will gain valuable international exposure and media coverage. Finalists also benefited from personalised coaching to prepare their pitch from Jon Eades, who leads Abbey Road Red, Europe’s music tech startup incubation programme.

Music creation & education category:
HumOn (South Korea) – Let your voice compose
HumOn is the simplest music creation app for dreamers. It is the best service for those who wished to make music but were hesitating because they do not know how to start with. Start HumOn and hum any melody into your smartphone. After recording, the app instantly writes it out in musical score. It also adds suitable chords and accompaniments for your melody. Try different genres or styles, and complete to create your own music. HumOn uses machine learning to create suitable accompaniment in the same way as a musician considers melody and musical chord to play accompaniment.
Music distribution discovery & category:
Truelinked (Denmark) – The world’s leading online marketplace for vetted artists in classical music
Today classical artists and producers alike live in a “black box” with little or no freedom to make their own decisions due to the old-fashioned agency system. This gave us the idea to disrupt the traditional agency business in Classical Music. To let technology and innovation create room for transparency, artistry, and meritocracy and replace the middleman with a modern, more efficient and far cheaper solution.
Marketing & data/analytics category:
Soundcharts (France) – Provides real-time airplay, playlists, charts and social analytics and more for any artist
Following the performance of any artist is now possible with the Soundcharts platform, the real-time intelligence solution for the Music Industry. Soundcharts improves decision-making in project management, artist scouting and reporting by bringing together real-time and historical music consumption data (charts, airplay, playlists, social). After 100 days of monetization Soundcharts already works with over 200 users from 100 different companies including the majors, many independent labels and management companies.
Experiential technologies – AR/VR, high resolution, IoT & hardware category:

Founded by two MIT alumni in Sep. 2014, Vinci is the first AI-enhanced, wireless and hands-free headphone that is controlled by your voice and powered by cloud technology, with no connection needed to your mobile phone. This standalone music player companion gives users a seamless listening and control experience with integrated music services, large local storage capacity, high quality audio specs, 3D recording, activity sensors, an advanced recommendation algorithm, and leading AI technology.
