Paris, October 18, 2016Reed MIDEM, organiser of Midem – the world’s leading music trade event – today announces the creation of the first-ever Midem Advisory Board comprised of top executives from the music industry.

The Midem Advisory Board’s principal purpose is to collaborate with Midem and to offer guidance in strategic and content development for the forthcoming 51st edition so as to best meet the needs of international delegates attending the event and identify the most relevant topics to be addressed. Midem takes place in Cannes, France, from 6-9 June 2017.

The inaugural Midem Advisory Board includes:

  • Stu Bergen, CEO, International and Global Commercial Services, Warner Music Group (USA)
  • Prof. Dr. Rolf Budde, President, Budde Music International (Germany)
  • Scott Cohen, Founder & VP International, The Orchard (UK)
  • Nicolas Galibert, President, Sony/ATV Music Publishing (France)
  • Joel Katz, Chairman, Global Entertainment and Media Group, Greenberg Traurig (USA)
  • Denis Ladegaillerie, CEO, Believe Digital (France)
  • Hartwig Masuch, CEO, BMG (Germany/Global)
  • Natalia Nastaskin, Head of US Music Operations, United Talent Agency (USA)
  • Jean-Noël Tronc, CEO, Sacem (France)
  • Gao Xiaosong, Chairman, Alibaba Entertainment Strategic Committee (China)

The Board’s primary task will be advising on ways for Midem to fully embrace its 2017 theme: “A New Golden Age for the Music Industry? Get Ready to Embrace it!”

Music streaming has emerged as the digital sector’s main driver of growth. According to the IFPI, revenues from all streams were up 45.2% in 2015, now overtaking downloads to become the industry’s primary digital revenue source. Projections indicate that global music streaming revenue will grow from $4.93 billion and 691.4 million users in 2016 to $7.52 billion and 935.8 million users by 2020 (Statista).

This Golden Age for the music industry opens a new gateway to other revenue on a global scale and it’s time to create a sustainable environment for the industry to thrive. Midem sets out to explore how the industry can take on the challenges of reshaping revenue streams, welcoming new players and their innovative solutions, fully embracing new consumer habits and expanding internationally, whilst modernising copyright laws and rethinking marketing strategies.

“We are delighted to welcome such an influential group of leaders as part of Midem 2017. The Midem Advisory Board represents all segments of the music ecosystem, from labels to publishers and music tech, as well as the key global music markets. Midem is the place where the future of music is shaped, and the Board’s insight and understanding of the challenges that lie ahead for the industry will be extremely valuable for this 51st edition and our ambition to explore how to make the most of this new Golden Age,” said Jérôme Delhaye, Entertainment Division Director, Reed MIDEM.

Natalia Nastaskin, Head of US Music Operations, United Talent Agency (USA), observed: “We are witnessing unprecedented change in global talent discovery and artist development thanks to technology and social media, and I am bullish on how these forces will drive continued global growth of the live business. I am thrilled to collaborate with Midem on its expanded conference offerings to stay one step ahead of these major shifts in our industry.”

Hartwig Masuch, CEO, BMG (Germany/Global), commented: “I’m delighted to be part of the first Midem Advisory Board. BMG only launched in 2008 – coincidentally the same week as Spotify – so we are finely attuned to the realities and opportunities of the digital age. The combination of streaming and the rapid development of markets like China gives us great optimism for the future.”

Stu Bergen, CEO, International and Global Commercial Services, Warner Music Group (USA) said: “As streaming becomes increasingly important to the recovery of our industry, it is crucial that we work across borders and cultures to establish best practices that benefit artists. By drawing on the strength of all our territories around the world, we will be able to serve both our global superstars and emerging talent. I am delighted to be part of the inaugural Midem Advisory Board as we explore how to bring our global community together and shape the future of the music business.”
