HARTWIG MASUCH, CEO OF BMG, TO KEYNOTE AT MIDEM 2018


Paris, 28 March 2018Hartwig Masuch, CEO of BMG, Bertelsmann’s new model music company which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year is to keynote at Midem 2018. Home of the global music community, Midem takes place in Cannes, France, from 5-8 June.

Masuch has been at the helm of the Bertelsmann-owned new BMG since it was established in October 2008, in the process creating the largest music company outside the three majors. Sometimes outspoken, in his determination to create a genuine alternative for songwriters and artists, Masuch has spent the past decade shaping a music company that combines publishing and recordings under one roof and comes with a commitment to its core values of fairness, transparency and service, delivered worldwide. Under his leadership BMG has emerged as a disruptor, initially dismissed but now inspiring imitators.

After starting out as the lead singer of a punk band, Masuch formed his own music publishing company before joining Warner Music Publishing (Germany) in 1985. He joined BMG Music Publishing in 1991 as Managing Director with responsibility for Germany, Switzerland and Austria, a position he held until 2007 when the company was acquired by Universal Music Group. Subsequently, he advised Bertelsmann, BMG’s parent company, as a consultant during the sale of its 50% stake in Sony BMG Music Entertainment.

In October 2008, Masuch was appointed CEO of a new music company bearing the name BMG, as Bertelsmann set out to create music’s first “digital native” music company. Since its launch, BMG has established a presence in 12 core music markets and now represents the rights to more than 2.5 million songs and recordings, including the catalogues of Chrysalis, Bug, Virgin, Mute, Sanctuary, Primary Wave, Talpa Music and Broken Bow Music Group.

Masuch will use his Midem address to reflect on the challenges music faces, the philosophy which drives his company – and just what it takes to launch a new global music company in the streaming age.
