​11th MUSIC STARTUP COMPETITION REVEALS NEXT-GEN INNOVATORS

Cannes, 7 June 2018Midemlab, the international pitching competition for innovative music-related startups, today announces its 2018 winners.

The four companies have developed projects that involve teaching by music, a fan-centric social platform for spreading new songs and artists, software allowing artists to control their ticketing experience and new technology to help artists to express their creativity.

Presented by Deezer, Midemlab is part of Midem 2018, the music industry tradeshow, which takes place in Cannes, France from 5-8 June.

Midemlab is the leading launchpad for innovative startups in the entertainment sector, and aims to put the spotlight on new digital solutions that offer fresh opportunities to stakeholders in the music sphere. Previous participants have raised millions of dollars in funding thanks to their Midemlab appearances, and many are now well-established in the music ecosystem.

Finalists had the chance to pitch their company and project to an audience of decision-makers, international media, and potential investors. All Midemlab finalists benefitted from personalised coaching by Abbey Road Red to prepare their pitch. The four winners, chosen by a jury after the pitches, will have private meetings with Deezer’s CEO, Hans-Holger Albrecht; Kima Ventures, the world’s most active business angel; Techstars Music, a startup accelerator run by Techstars and leading companies from the global music business such as Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and Concord Music. Finalists will also receive free legal advice from Jeff Liebenson of Liebenson Law, and free public relations advice from PR strategist Joanna Kirk.

This year, a record 234 submissions were received from 42 countries, up 68% on last year, underlining the dynamism of entrepreneurship in the music sector. Almost half the submissions came from startups founded in 2017 or 2018. The 20 finalists were selected by Midemlab’s partners Kima Ventures, Music Ally, and bluenove, and between them, cover the full spectrum of music innovation. One winner is chosen by the jury in each of four categories.

Music has always been a great tool for language acquisition; it’s why we learn nursery rhymes as children and the fact that we’ve all had lyrics or “ear worms” stuck in our heads for days isn’t anecdotal; neuroscientists have proven that words heard to a melody are more easily remembered compared to words spoken.

Fans compete to find music first and spread it around the world
Laylo is a social platform where fans compete for finding the best music first and spreading it around the world. We integrate the biggest music services so fans can listen to and share music with their friends and community in a fantasy sports style platform. Our technology allows us to identify the fans who found a song or artist first, how far they spread it, where they spread it to and what they should listen to next. With Laylo, anyone can become a tastemaker and turn their favorite artists into superstars.

Artists are the best marketers in the world. And yet, they have zero control over the way their tickets are sold. Seated’s software empowers artists to take control of their ticketing experience –and be involved in the transaction and own the data at every step of the way.
Prior to founding Seated, David McKay helped build the popular US ticketing platform Applauze that was later acquired by Azoff MSGE and LiveNation.

Neova, the MIDI Ring controller to allow artists to express their creativity
Enhancia is a growing team fuelled by a common passion for music, founded in France in 2017. Enhancia is about expressing your creativity. The company designs innovative music equipment to enhance the way people can interact with instruments. Enhancia developed a connected ring which allows you to control sound effects through simple hand gestures to enhance artists’ expressivity. This accessory is compatible with any digital instruments, any music software. In January 2018, Stevie Wonder tried our prototype at CES in Las Vegas, he said “I like it…I love it” and bought 2 of them.
