CHARITY: WATER’S FOUNDER SCOTT HARRISON TO KEYNOTE AT MIDEM
WHAT THE MUSIC INDUSTRY CAN LEARN FROM A TRUE DISRUPTOR IN THE SOCIAL MEDIA SPACE

Paris, 24 March 2015 Midem today announces that Scott Harrison, Founder and CEO of the clean-water NGO charity: water, is to deliver a keynote speech to the world’s leading music ecosystem tradeshow.

Harrison spent 10 years as a nightclub promoter in New York City before founding charity: water in 2006. In eight years, the ground-breaking non-profit organisation has raised over $150 million and funded some 13,000 water projects in 24 developing countries. When completed, these projects will provide more than 4.4 million people with clean, safe drinking water.

Harrison will share his story and unveil how charity: water grew to become one of the world’s most innovative charities by engaging its donors through the clever use of social media and branded content. Harrison effectively reinvented the charity model, coming up with the unique proposition whereby 100% of public donations go to fund projects, since overhead is paid by private donors. Total transparency on where the money goes has been key to the NGO’s success.

Harrison’s keynote will allow the Midem audience to draw inspiration from his experience, which is already fully embraced by the tech community, and to apply this learning to the music industry. Harrison’s keynote will be part of Midem Talks plenary conference programme, and will take place on Saturday, 6 June 2015.

Harrison was recognised in Fortune Magazine’s 40 under 40 list, the Forbes Magazine Impact 30 list and was #10 in Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business issue. He is currently a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader.

“It is a great pleasure to welcome Scott Harrison as keynote speaker at Midem 2015. Important lessons can be drawn from his disruptive strategy in the charity sector, the first of which was to fully embrace convergence with technology and the opportunities offered by digital tools. His presence underlines how Midem is a platform that showcases innovation in all fields as potential sources of inspiration for the music industry,” said Bruno Crolot, Director of Music Markets at Reed MIDEM.

“Embracing new technology allowed charity: water to break the walls with our donors, not only by engaging them but also by changing their charity experience and making them truly want to give to our cause. Music has been a strong part of my life as a nightclub promoter and it still very much is. I am excited to share some insights with the Midem audience as I strongly believe that the music industry is facing similar challenges as we do, namely accepting the growing role of new technologies and making the most out of all the opportunities it brings about.”

“I have had the honour of working directly with Scott Harrison and his awesome team at charity: water for a few years now, and I’ve seen the impact of clean water in an Ethiopian community first hand. Scott is one of the most inspiring and persuasive guys I’ve ever met. He has a unique way of communicating his vision and why it is he needs you to be involved,” said Daniel Ek, CEO and Founder, Spotify.
