Paris, 29 January, 2019 – Midem, the home of the global music community, today announces that music licensing pioneer and a key player in the Chinese market, Mathew Daniel, will give a keynote at this year’s conference, in Cannes, June 4-7.
China has become the 10th largest recorded music market globally. As Vice-President, International, at NetEase Cloud Music, the country’s fastest growing music service, Mathew Daniel has put the independent music community at the heart of streaming. Having launched the first legal independent music store in China 10 years ago, he paved the way for many international artists to legally distribute their music in China, including the then unknown artist, Adele. He will address delegates on the exciting developments taking place in the Chinese music market.
At the forefront of welcoming leading Chinese executives and companies to the annual gathering of the international music business and having featured key figures including Alibaba’s Gao Xiaosong to Tencent’s Andy Ng, Midem will celebrate the importance of this key nation in Cannes during the 2019 event.
Alexandre Deniot, Director of Midem, recognises the significance of Daniel’s debut keynote, saying, “We’re honoured to welcome Mathew to address our attendees. It’s vital, at a time when the music industry is becoming truly global, and new music markets are emerging and even taking over, to highlight the contribution he has made in bringing the Chinese market to its current place of importance with such a vibrant future. As a company, NetEase is doing essential work to place the Chinese music industry at the vanguard of the sector’s evolution. Both Mathew and NetEase are an inspiration and an example to the international industry through their work with independent artists and organisations, and in the part they have played in making China one of the most exciting and integral players in today’s global industry.”
Mathew Daniel was one of the jury members of the inaugural Midemlab, Midem’s startup competition and over a decade later, he now has the chance to address a more digitally evolved audience at Midem. He says, “Midem has been an institution of the music industry over the years and I’m looking forward to returning to it, with the opportunity to share my outlook from where we’re at and also to hear other viewpoints from industry attendees.”
