In keeping with Midem’s mandate to bring together top music industry executives and artists, the Midem Digital Edition has also become the social network for the global music community. The digital event has united visitors from all corners of the globe in conversation, knowledge-sharing, future planning, new music, tech innovation, networking and the essential creation of new collaborative partnerships.
Midem Director, Alexandre Deniot, says, “Following the unprecedented success of the Midem Digital Edition, Midem enters a new era. The platform has seen massive participation and has been able to bring together the industry’s top artists and decision-makers. It remained true to Midem’s DNA and is where the music business is happening right now. The Digital Edition has been and continues to be the place to learn, connect, and be inspired, to forge new business relationships, and find solutions together. In the words of the speakers…
Alexandra Lioutikoff, President, Latin America and US Latin, Universal Music Publishing Group, on a brighter future, “A new, proactive way of doing business is going to come out of this…I am sure we are going to become, as an industry, much stronger and better.”
Denis Ladegaillerie, CEO, Believe Digital, on a positive outlook for indies, “2020 to 2030, I think the headline is going to be the rise of local independent artists, because we are now at the stage where streaming is the largest form of music consumption… The first artists that are benefiting from this are independent artists.”
Tuma Basa, Director, Urban Music, YouTube, on the global industry recognising the potential of the African music markets, “The amount of activity they’re seeing on social media, the activity they’re seeing on streaming services, the view counts they’re seeing on YouTube: that’s what triggered the interest from the music industry in African music.”
According to Fred Davis, Partner, The RAINE Group, artist and label services is “absolutely the fastest growing segment in the entire music industry. It was practically nothing two or three years ago, and this year we estimate it will be, a $2bn sector, 10% of the entire music industry, growing at a 35% to 40% year over year”.

And the Show Goes On…

With new content being added over the coming weeks, Midem Digital Edition remains live and free to access for everyone. This is Midem’s contribution to the industry at this difficult and continuingly unsettling time.
Looking ahead to Midem 2021 (01-04 June), Midem Director, Alexandre Deniot says, “I’m now looking forward to next year. Let’s regroup in Cannes to celebrate Midem’s 55th anniversary, our huge reunion edition. Our killer lineup already includes giants like T.I. with an exclusive Femi Kuti gig.”
Global hip-hop icon, T.I., is also looking forward to 2021, beyond the pandemic, when he can bring an installation of his trap music museum to Cannes, telling Midem Digital Edition users, “This too shall pass and the future will be here before we know it. So let’s plan for next year when people at Midem will be able to come to Cannes and absorb the Trap Music Museum for themselves.”
